Keeping the LPG Gas Cylinder outside Kitchen.

In this article we will be talking about Gas Pipe Line or keeping the LPG Gas Cylinder outside the Kitchen.  Many a times it is very easy and convenient to have the gas cylinder placed somewhere outside the kitchen.  This saves the space inside the kitchen and makes the kitchen safer in case of possible accident.

What is the use of the Gas Pipe Line and advantages of keeping the LPG Gas Cylinder outside the Kitchen.

Let us briefly try to understand the importance of having the LPG Gas Pipeline in the first place.  The LPG Gas Pipeline reduces lots of effort of supplying the LPG gases to homes.  Following steps can be completely removed:

  1. Making the Cylinder Bottles.
  2. Filling the Cylinder Bottles.
  3. Transporting Cylinders to different locations.
  4. Carrying cylinders to homes.
  5. Collecting empty cylinders back to filling stations.
  6. Checking defective Cylinders etc.

The LPG gas can be supplied directly to homes.  Lot of human efforts can also be reduced in this entire process.

Uses and Utility.

Now let us try to understand why we need the LPG Cylinders outside the Kitchen.  What are advantages of keeping LPG Gas Cylinder outside the Kitchen.

  1. Keeping LPG Gas Cylinder outside the Kitchen gives more space in the kitchen.
  2. Makes the kitchen safer in case of any accident.
  3. You don’t have to allow the cylinder delivery person inside your house.
  4. You don’t have to carry cylinders inside the house and outside the house.

Here we will not discuss the entire LPG Gas Line installation process.  It is a large and tedious process and requires a huge investment.  Today or later this is going to happen in cities and may be later in smaller towns and villages.  May be, it will start with villages, smaller towns and at the end in cities.  This is so because it will require lot of digging, laying pipe lines and creating lot of temporary problem for the residents.

How to install and use the Gas Pipeline for keeping LPG Cylinder outside the Kitchen.

In homes the LPG Cylinders can be kept is some places which are safe for keeping the cylinders.  Also the place for keeping cylinders must be accessible for the cylinder delivery person.

The cylinder can be placed in places like –

  1. a) Somewhere very near to the entry gate.
  2. b) Space under the stairs.
  3. c) If you live in an independent house of a bunglow, you can create a place outside the kitchen which can be very near to the kitchen.
  4. d) If you live in a multistory building, or your kitchen is not in the ground floor. The gas cylinder keeping space can be created on the ground floor and the piping can be taken and connected to the kitchen. This will make the process of receiving and returning the gas cylinder very easy for you and the delivery man as well.

In large multistory housing societies, gas banks are created and gas is supplied through pipelines.  The consumed gas is billed through the meter.

Process & Installation

Everything depends on the distance of kitchen from the point we are planning to keep the gas cylinder.  First we have to identify the starting point of the gas pipeline and the finish point.  The starting point is the place the cylinders will be kept and the finish point or points are places where we require the gas supply.

Safety first is the mantra.  Always ensure good quality and sufficient safety valves in place.  Safety valves or we can call them start and stop values.  We must have safety valves in following three points:

  • At the point where we connect the Gas Cylinder with the supply pipe.
  • At the point the gas pipe lines enters our house or kitchen.
  • Just before the connecting nozzle, where we will connecting the soft pipe with the nozzle and the gas burner, stove or hob.

Very small length Pipeline to Kitchen

Let us assume that the place of keeping the gas cylinder is very near to the kitchen, we can use the “Suraksha Pipe” (in India).  It is always recommended to keep the gas pipe line open and accessible.  The pipe must be in single piece.  Must be installed in such a way that it can be replaced easily.

For very small length, copper pipes of 12 or 14 gauge is also recommended.  In some cases for very small area composite pipes are also used.  While using composite pipes, great care must be taken.  Ensure that the pipe is of very good quality.   The pipe must be checked periodically.  Always take approval from the manufacturer that you will be using the pipe for LPG Gas.

Moderately Long Pipeline.

If the distance of kitchen is more than 6 to 10 ft, it is recommended to use heavy MS Pipe.  The recommended class of MS Pipe is “C” Class.  The pipes are always sold in three classes, A, B and C.  Here A being the lightest and C being the heaviest quality of pipe.

We don’t need a very wide pipe.  We can use half inch or quarter inch pipe.  While installing the MS pipe, extreme precaution must be taken to ensure that there is no leakage.  In addition to the danger of accident with leaking pipe, another problem will be wastage of gas.  You will find that your gas finishes too fast if you have some type of leakage in the pipe.

Reasonable Long Pipeline

Now in the case of installing the gas pipe line which is too long, professional help and expertise must be taken.  Suppose you live in a second floor flat and you have some servant room of facility to create a gas cylinder keeping place on ground floor.  You will need quite a longer pipe line.

Here it is always recommended to hire some expert to do the work.  Don’t leave the work totally in the hands of your vendor.  Keep a close check on workmanship, testing and after sale service.  The long pipe line must be installed with proper supports to the pipein equal distance, so that the pipeline does not move due to any unexpected impact.

In India the problem of monkeys jumping on pipelines is a normal problem.  The pipeline must be planned in such a way that monkeys do not access to the gas pipe line.

Yellow is the approved color for gas pipe line.  Always paint the LPG pipe line in yellow color for universal identification.

Disadvantages of the product or service.

However there is no disadvantage in the first place.  The disadvantages of keeping gas cylinder outside the kitchen and installing gas pipe line can be few as below:

  1. Additional cost of doing the piping work.
  2. Having to take care of one more safety issue of leakage and maintenance of the LPG gas pipe line.
  3. Wastage of gas which may be left in the pipeline and seepage.
  4. You will have a fixed place where you will get the gas supplied. In the case when you want gas is some other place will be an issue for you.  You will require one more pipeline for that point or you may have to take out the gas cylinder and use it in the traditional way.
  5. Security of the LPG Gas Cylinder that is kept outside or somewhere else. You have to ensure that the Gas Cylinder is safe and is safe from being stolen.
  6. Forgetting about health of the soft pipes that connect the cylinder to the pipeline and then another soft pipe which connects to the gas stove or hob.

Precautions

The precautions are, that we must be aware of the disadvantages and we must take care of the possible disadvantages.

  1. Always have proper safety points in place and regularly check. You must have stoppage valves at gas cylinder point or start point and also inside the kitchen just before the gas stove.  In the case the pipe line is coming from some distance, we suggest you to have one stoppage valve just before the gas pipe line enters the home premises.  It is always better to have one extra safety measure in place.
  2. Always check for any possible leakage in the installed pipe. The metal pipes and the soft pipes as well.
  3. The gas cylinder must be kept in some safe and secure place to avoid any damage or theft of the cylinder.
  4. Make it a point to check the health of the entire pipeline in frequent intervals.
  5. In humid or coastal areas extra care must be taken against rusting of the pipes. Stainless Steel Pipes are also used to avoid rusting of pipes in these regions.

The cost of getting Gas Pipe line can run between Rs. 100 per running feet to Rs. 200 per running feet.
