Advantage and disadvantage of Wall to Wall Carpets.

Wall to wall Carpets are the most common type of soft floors.  The wall to wall carpet does justice to the word “soft floor”.  They are the real soft floors.  If you want a cozy, royal and elegant look in your room then wall to wall carpet is the best product.  As always there are advantage and disadvantage of Wall to Wall Carpets.

The wall to wall carpets comes in roll form.  For installing wall to wall carpets they are cut to sizes of the room.  The carpet may have joints in one room as they come in the standard width of 6 ft, 10 ft, 12 ft and 13 ft etc.  To cover the entire room the installer will have to cut the carpet to your sizes.  Please note that there may be joints in your room carpet if the size of your room is bigger than the width of the carpet.  If your room is within the width of the carpet your will have a joint less wall to wall carpet.

Before discussing the advantage and disadvantage of wall to wall carpets, let us understand different types of carpets available in the market.

Types of Wall to Wall Carpets available:

  1. The most economical Non Woven Carpet.  (Widely used in Tent Houses, Wedding Halls and Public Gathering Functions like conferences, Trade shows etc.)
  2. The luxury looking cut pile thick carpets.  These carpets have luxury look, are thick generally and the pile of the carpet is cut from the top.  The look of the carpet is of animal fur or hair.
  3. The loop pile carpets.  These carpets are made having multiple loops all over the carpet.  In other words the pile of the carpet are uncut.  In the luxury carpets the pile is in cut form, the pile of loop pile carpet is in uncut form.  The density of the fiber in the carpet will tell you the quality of the carpet.
  4. Loop Pile Carpet  – Tiles are the latest entrant in the field.  These are the loop pile carpets made in the form of tiles having a very strong backing underneath to give the firmness to the carpet.  These carpet tiles are mainly installed in office areas, home theaters etc.  The Carpet Tiles gives a very royal, elegant and corporate look to any office with the added advantage of sound insulation.  In big offices where the number of people working in one particular are is too high, the noise and sound created may become a trouble, the carpet tiles works as an acoustic element and is a  wonderful sound insulator for floor alongwith the false ceiling and other sound managers installed in any area.

Now lets us jump into advantage and disadvantage of Wall to Wall Carpets.  Before understanding the disadvantages lets talk about the advantages and merits.

Merits or advantages of Wall to Wall Carpet

  1. Carpet is a very good insulator.  It can save on your AC Bill and the room gets cooler faster and keeps you warm in winters or cold weather.
  2. It will not be wrong to write that it is easier to maintain.  If you can do regular vacum cleaning, carpet is a very good product.  You have to protect the carpet from stains, moisture and dirt.  If taken care of all the above points you cannot explain the merits of a carpet.  You will enjoy having a wall to wall carpet.
  3. Carpet is a very good sound insulator.  You will experience the advantages of sound insulation while watching TV in a carpeted room or Children playing in a carpeted room.  There will be very little eco or noise if wall to wall carpet is installed.
  4. You can enjoy walking bare footed on a wall to wall carpet.  It is a wonderful experience altogether.
  5. In offices also loop pile carpet and carpet tiles are a boon.  The loop pile carpets are very rough and rugged for wear and tear.  The carpet tiles are another benefit for the office areas.  You can just replace the damaged carpet tile if you need to repair the floor.
  6. The wall to wall carpets are 100% anti slippery and protection from accidents due to falling on the floors for whatever reason.  These are the safest form of floor specially for the senior citizens and small children

As always every product has advantages and disadvantages we are discussing advantage and disadvantage of Wall to Wall Carpets.  Now let us see the negative side – disadvantages or demerits of wall to wall carpet.

DeMerits of Wall to Wall Carpet

  1. If not cleaned properly may accumulate lot of dust.  The dust may lead to allergies, moth, dust mites and other foreign particles not good for health.  If you are sensitive to dust allergies please avoid wall to wall carpet.
  2. If some hard material like tea, coffee, cooked vegetables, soups etc.  is spilled on the carpet it will be very difficult or almost impossible to remove.
  3. If a portion of carpet gets damaged you may need to remove the entire carpet.  Doing patchwork will look very ugly.
  1. You may need professionals to clean the carpet at least once in a year depending upon your location and uses.

Importance of using Underlay Foam in Laminate Wooden Flooring.

Laminate Wooden Flooring or Engineer Wood Flooring is a very good, exclusive and wonderful floor in any office of home.  Laminate Wooden Floor looks excellent and is very comfortable and cozy.  This floor immediately lifts the status of any place this floor is installed.  While installing wooden flooring, underlay foam is used on the floor.  Let us understand the importance of using Underlay Foam in Laminate Wooden Flooring.

A rarely noticed item while laying Laminate Wooden Floor is the “Underlay Foam 2 mm” layed under the wooden flooring, be it Laminate Wood or Engineer Wood.  There are lot of advantages and importance of using Underlay Foam in Laminate Wooden Flooring.

Importance of using Underlay Foam in Laminate Wooden Flooring- PE Underlay Foam.

  1. The underlay foam under the Laminate/Wooden Floor should of PE (Polyethylene).
  2. As polyethylene sheet is slightly hard as well as soft.  It helps in giving the wood floor a semi soft underlay support.
  3. The PE underlay acts as a balancing item to cover the minor undulation of the main floor.
  4. The thickness of the PE underlay foam should be of 2 to 3 mm.
  5. Thicker foam can cause damage to the locks of the wood floor while using.
  6. The less than 2 mm thickness can get damaged installing.
  7.  Do not get tempted to use thicker of thinner foam.
  8. The foam to be used should be poly laminated.  The polythene laminated to the PE will act as a barrier between the floor and the wood.  It will protect your floor from moisture and other nature attacks.
  9. If poly laminated foam is not available than use a sheet of polythene before laying the PE foam.

This small precaution can protect your precious laminate floor for minor moisture coming from the floor, moths, insects, borers and to some extent from the termite.

However, it is impossible to protect wood from termite.   There are separate set of precautions for protecting your wood floor from termite.

Wooden Flooring six Precautions before installing. How to install Wooden Flooring.

Wooden Flooring looks wonderful in any establishment, be it office, home, showroom or shops.  It instantly enhances the decorum and goodwill of the place.  The comfort level and re silence of the room also greatly increased.  Let us understand how to install wooden flooring.

Six precautions should be taken before installing the wooden flooring.  This will allow you to enjoy your wooden floor for years.  So lets check Wooden Flooring six precautions before installing and how to install wooden flooring.

1. The Floor must be clean:

Before installing the wooden flooring please check your floor and make sure that the floor is clean.  The base floor must be clean without any dirt.  The dirt, sand particles can cause imbalance.  This is the basic and most important point to understand how to install wooden flooring.

2. The Floor must be dry:

The base floor should be fully dry.  The moisture in the floor can cause permanent damage to the wooden flooring.

While making the PCC base floor we have to cure it properly for creating the strength of the floor.  The nicely cured (cured with water) floor takes minimum 2 weeks to dry in normal temperature of 35+ degree temperature.  Please make sure that the base floor is fully dry before installing the Wooden Floor.  The alternate option is to use self levelling chemical to given even and dry floor.

A simple procedure of checking the moisture level of the floor is to paste a clear polythene on the floor and check it after 12 to 24 hours.  If the polythene accumulates water under it then the floor still has moisture.  Laying of Wooden Floor should be avoided till the moisture dries up.  Dry floor is another important point to understand how to install wooden flooring.

3. The Floor must be smooth & even:

The base floor must be smooth.  Smooth means that the floor should not have undulations in it.  The uneven floor will create unnecessary complications in any wooden floor.  As the planks of the wooden floor are straight, any depression or bump on the floor will make the wooden floor uneven.  The uneven base floor will result in following problems:

a) The floor will make cracking noise while walking on it.

b) The floor will look uneven if the unevenness is too high.

c) At longer duration the shape of the plank of the wooden flooring may bent as per the depression of the base floor.

d) The interlocking locks of the Wooden Floor may get damaged while using the floor due to unevenness.

The floor must be checked and ensure that there are no major unevenness in it. The different ways of checking unevenness are:

i) Place a long straight piece of wooden bar, aluminium section on the floor. You will be able to easily see the unevenness of the floor.

ii) Second option is of spilling some water on the floor.  Wherever there is accumulation of water, there is depression in the floor.

The uneven floor must be leveled using self leveling material.  The different ways of leveling the floor are:

a) Use a good self leveling material to level the floor.

b) Redo the PCC in the depressed area.

c) Grind the embossed/bumped areas of the floor.

d) For short term solutions you can use White Cement Putty or Plaster of Paris to level the floor. Plaster of Paris (POP) is not the correct product, but for instant solution it can be used (better to avoid).  This was another very important point to ponder and understand how to install wooden flooring.

4. Block all points from where water can come:

Water is the enemy of Wooden Flooring.  Please check all points from where water can seep in or enter the area where water can enter.  If you have attached bathroom please see that the bathroom floor is down than the room floor.  As additional precaution please put a stone strip on the gate to be double sure that water does not enter the floor.

5. Check Termite or Borer:

Termite & Borer are the another enemy of wooden floor.  Please check and take all precautions against Termite & Borer.  The termite and borer can completely wipe out and finish the wooden flooring.  A proper termite treatment should be done if there is threat of termite in the area.

6. Put proper protective layer under the Wooden Floor:

Before laying the wooden floor please ensure that Polythene + 2mm HDPE (separately or laminated) sheet should be layed under the laminate wooden floor. This layer protects the floor and also covers minor undulation of the floor.

If these precautions are taken the Wooden Floor, be it Laminate of Engineered will last for years.

8 Great Ideas to keep your building cool and thermally insulated.

Summers are very hot in many areas, specially in India.  In India summers are very hot.  Due to this heat the indoors of any building become very hot and sometimes humid as well.  Here are 8 great ideas to keep your building cool and thermally insulated.

Summers are wonderful but the heat is not that pleasant, specially in areas where the temperatures are too high.  There are many options to keep your indoors cool by way of Air Conditioning, Air Cooling etc.  But we cannot stop the transmission of heat.  If we can restrict the transmission of heat from outside to our indoors, these cooling devices will be more effective and less costly to use.  Hence here are the great ideas to keep your building cool and thermally insulated.

The process of restricting the heat (temperature) from transmitting is called thermal insulation.  With the increase in temperature in summers, protecting the living spaces from summer heat is the major problem.

The heat of the sun gradually transmits our living spaces through the walls and RCC Roof, Tin Shades or any other modern day home, office or factory.  In olden days the houses were made in such a way to minimize the heat transmission using natural products.  With the use of modern products thermal insulation is a major issue.

Thermal insulation can be done during construction itself.  We are not covering this area in this article.

We will be covering the challenge of thermal insulation in existing buildings.  Here we are giving the name and introduction of few products which can be used for Thermal Insulation or in other words, minimizing the transmission of heat in any place.  The first and foremost is the air.  If you give a gap with air in between any two surfaces it is a wonderful insulation.

Now let us see the different products available which can work as a barrier to transmission of heat.

Different Products available for Thermal Insulation:

1. Glass Wool/Rock Wool.

This product range is a very good temperature insulator.  This is also a good sound insulator as well.  The product comes in shape of fibers.  Lately this product is now available fully covered from all sides.  There are some health hazard issues in this product.  The open rock wool or glass wool has lot of harmful fibers which can easily fly in air thus leading to harmful affect to health.  Every precaution should be taken to cover this material before using.  If this issue is taken care of this can be a very good product for checking the transfer of temperature (be it hot or cold).

This is the first of the 8 great ideas to keep your building cool and thermally insulated.

You can install this insulation under the ceiling and then cover the area with false ceiling.  Similarly, you can insulate the walls using them and then flushing the wall with secondary wall paneling.

2. Mineral Fiber Tiles.

The mineral fiber tiles are also used for heat insulation, but this product is mainly useful in sound insulation and aesthetics.  We do not recommend this product for the purpose of heat or temperature insulation.  Of course this product can be used with other insulating products for better and perfect effect.  However, for controlling normal issues this product can be a very easy and effective solution.  We suggest using Glass Wool, EPS, and XPS before covering the place with the false ceiling of Mineral Fiber Tiles.  We have to first put glass wool, rock wool, EPS or XPS Sheets under the RCC or any other ceiling.  The installed insulator can be covered with Mineral Fiber Ceiling Tiles.  Mineral Fiber Tiles will finish the surface but the work of insulating the heat will be done by other components like rock wool, glass wool, EPS and XPS etc.

This is the second of the 8 great ideas to keep your building cool and thermally insulated.

3. Calcium Silicate False Ceiling Tile and Board.

Calcium Silicate Board is a good product which is fire proof and a good thermal insulator.  This product can used to create dry walls.  The Calcium Silicate Boards can work as a very good thermal insulator again if used with some additional insulating material or without.

Normally, the maximum heat is transferred from the roof.  If the roof is treated nicely major issue of heat transfer can be treated.  Calcium Silicate False Ceiling Tiles is a wonderful solution to this.  The Calcium Silicate False Ceiling Tiles is a wonderful product with wonderful features like light weight, 100% RH (Relative Humidity), in other words the tiles are 100% water resistant, non combustible, fungus, termite and bacteria proof.  The thermal conductivity of these false ceiling tiles is 0.043.  Due to this figure of excellent thermal conductivity, these tiles perform wonderfully in locations where we have to control the heat transfer in any building.

The leading brands who can supply you this product are Aerolite and Armstrong.  If you have a tin shade or even RCC roof, false ceiling of Calcium Silicate Tiles can give you relief from the heat transfer which will save on your cooling cost.

This was the third of the 8 great ideas to keep your building cool and thermally insulated.

4. EPS (Expanded Polystyrene Sheet).

EPS is also called thermocol.  Thermocol sheet is a very good heat insulator.  EPS is made by bonding the EPS balls.  This is a common product and almost everyone is aware of this product.  The product is very light weight and density of the product can go upto a certain extent only.  The product has limited life.  But this product is a very good temperature insulator.  A reasonably thick sheet can work as a wonderful barrier to any thermal transmission.  This product can be used under the false ceiling to enhance the thermal rejection (heat rejection) in any structure.  But I personally would not recommend using this product as effectiveness and life of this product is not very impressive.

This is the Fourth of the 8 great ideas to keep your building cool and thermally insulated.

5. XPS (Extruded Polystyrene Sheets).

This is the improved version of EPS.  XPS in comparison to EPS (Thermocol Sheet) is a stronger and better product.  It is a block type material made up of polystyrene.  The product is very strong, has very little water absorption and is a wonderful thermal insulator.  To the best of my knowledge, this is the best product which can be used in construction stage  available in thermal insulation as on date.  This products performs quiet good if used during initial construction stage.  The XPS sheet can be sandwiched between two brick walls, which will give you excellent thermal insulation.

XPS can reduce the indoor temperature by almost more than 6 to 8 degree centigrade.  Also it can delay the increase in indoor temperature in summers.  In areas where evening or night temperatures are cold this product can do wonders, as by the time the heat transmits the outdoor temperature will start to decline.

This is the fifth of the 8 great ideas to keep your building cool and thermally insulated.

6. Mgo Boards – Magnesium Board.

Next in the list comes the latest enterant – Mgo Board or Mangnesium Board.  Magnesium Board is very strong board and has thermal conductivity almost equal to Calcium Silicate Tiles.  This board can be easily used in outdoors as well.  Mgo Boards is a very good product in pre fab structure buildings.  To explain this, you can create a structure of iron on your top floor or any where else and the walls of that metal structure can be covered with Mgo Boards.  You can put the Mgo board in outside as well as inner walls and finish the interiors with the help of Mgo board.  The outer wall of Mgo board can be painted as usual.  The indoor walls of Mgo board can be finished in various ways like – Wall Paper, PVC Lamination, Install Tiles on Mgo Board.  You can install almost anything on the walls of Mgo Board.  Windows can be created in the metal structure and finished and installed.  You can also create dry walls of Mgo Board which are very strong, thermally insulated and also can be made sound proof by adding glass wool, rock wool, EPS or Xps in between.

This is the sixth of the 8 great ideas to keep your building cool and thermally insulated.

7. Weather Coat or heat reduction paint on roof and outer walls.

Suppose we have an existing building and we cannot do much with the structure.  We can reduce the the temperature of the building by around 6 to 8 degree centigrade simply by painting the roof top and sun facing walls from outside.  This paint will work as a barrier to easy transfer of heat to the indoors through roof and walls.  The colour of this paint is generally white which will reflect the UV rays and heat.  The coat of the paint will not allow free transfer to heat to indoors.

This is the seventh of the 8 great ideas to keep your building cool and thermally insulated.

8. Hanging of Agro Net or Green Net.

In the case that you want some temporary solution to heat, the easiest thing is to hand Agro Net or Green net on the walls facing the maximum sun light.  Similarly you can mount the green net over your roof.  The green net will work as a barrier between the hot sun light and your roof top.  This can reduce the indoor temperature substantially.

This is the eighth of the 8 great ideas to keep your building cool and thermally insulated.

Difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring -Industrial Flooring Segment.

In Industrial Segment in many cases clean floor is required.  Mainly two types of flooring is preferred – Epoxy and Vinyl Floor.  Both the products are good and effective.  We just try to understand the difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.

Product:

Epoxy is a paint type liquid which is layed on the base floor.  The epoxy flooring is layed by spreading multiple layers of epoxy liquid on the floor to get the desired thickness.

Vinyl Floor is a factory made sheet of poly vinyl chloride.  The sheet are made in the factory which has even thickness.  The quality and specifications can be pre understood before laying the flooring.  The Vinyl Flooring is installed by pasting the vinyl sheet using water based adhesive.

This is one difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.

Precondition required for installation:

Before installing the EPOXY the base floor quality must be inspected and a very strong and firm base floor without any cracks or undulation is required.  It is quiet difficult to get even layer coating and you have to depend upon the honesty and workmanship of the laying contractor.

For installing the PVC Flooring the floor must be smooth, dry and clean.  Minor undulation, cracks can easily be covered and taken care by the secondary PVC Flooring.  The secondary layer of vinyl flooring works as an additional floor to the main sub floor.

This is another difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.

Feel & Finish:

Epoxy Flooring can be installed all over the floor without any joints coming in between.  The entire floor will look seamless.

Vinyl Floor will have joints in between due to limitation of being a factory made product.  The maximum width available is 2 meter x 20 to 30 meter in India in roll form.  If we opt for tiles the size may vary between 305mm x 305mm or other sizes as available.  The joints can be taken care of by welding the joints.

This is another difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.

Effect of underfloor moisture:

In case moisture comes from the underfloor the Epoxy floor may get peeled off.  You cannot reused the peeled off epoxy floor.

Vinyl Flooring also gets peeled off if moisture comes in the underfloor.  But the area will still be usable as a layer of secondary floor will be there to take care of.  As and when the problem of moisture is resolved, the vinyl floor can be installed again.  The vinyl floor if removed from the area can still be used in some other area.

This is another difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.

Effects of Cracks and damage of base floor:

Epoxy becomes the part of the base floor.  Epoxy floor gets peeled off or get damaged if the main base floor develops cracks.  Once the epoxy floor starts peeling off, the area can spread over larger area.  The Epoxy Floor will need immediate repair to the base floor and the epoxy layer.  It is almost impossible to match the colour of epoxy flooring.

The Vinyl Floor will act as a support to cracked base floor for a pretty long time.  There will be no visible problem to the user.  This is because vinyl has some elasticity characteristics and also it is a second layer of flooring and is not a paint.  The repair of cracked base floor can be done later as per convenience.  Incase there is a need to replace the vinyl floor, matching colour can be found and replaced*.

This is another difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.

Cleaning:

It is very easy to clean a floor which has Epoxy Flooring.  But if there is some water logging sports, the epoxy may get damaged if in contact with water for longer period.

It is also very easy to clean the floor with has Vinyl Floor.  There is no risk of flooring getting cracked or peeling of due to water logging on the floor or excessive cleaning requirement .

This is another difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.

Colour & Designs:

Generally Epoxy Floor comes in plain shades.  There is limitation in designs.

In Vinyl Floor there is no limitation in designs and prints.  You can get any imaginable design on the vinyl and you can create many new design by using different colours.

This is another difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.

Acids & Alkalies:

Epoxy Floor can be good if acids and alkalis are to be used in some specific area.  Now a days vinyl with bearing capacity to some acids and alkalies has been developed.

This is another difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.

Cost & Value for Money:

A very normal and standard quality of 2mm Epoxy Flooring is of double the cost of good quality standard 2mm Vinyl Flooring.  It is almost impossible to measure the thickness of even 2mm thickness in Epoxy Flooring, whereas you can measure the Vinyl Floor even after installation.

This is another difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.

Wear & Tear:

In heavy traffic areas Epoxy and Vinyl get weard  depending upon the quality of Vinyl or Epoxy you have used.  Redoing the floor is another issue.  For redoing the Epoxy Floor you may keep the area unused for a longer time, whereas in case of Vinyl the floor can be immediately used after installation of the Vinyl Floor.

This is another difference between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.

Above are the major differences between epoxy flooring and vinyl flooring.  I sure you may have some more inputs on this.  Please feel free to leave your comments and inputs below.
